Proof that Republicans can still do what's rational and right Los Angeles Times

Of course though things get complicated before everything winds down to a bachelor party thrown for Kid. This film was notable for debuting Chris Tucker and featuring the rap group Immature (later known as IMx) who play Kid's nephews. It was the last movie to feature a plot revolving around Kid 'N Play but not the last to feature them altogether. The actors in “House Party” (citywide), a catchy, often hilarious teen-age sex comedy set in an all-black milieu, seem to think musically.

House Party (1990 film)

House Party is a film franchise based on Reginald Hudlin's award-winning Harvard University student film. Initially conceived as a trilogy, the first three films star Kid and Play of the popular hip hop duo Kid 'n Play. The first two movies also starred Martin Lawrence, while the third installment marks Chris Tucker's debut on film. Upon its initial release, the first film garnered critical acclaim and has since become a cult classic.

Black teens of that era, on the other hand, had no quintessential equivalent. There were films targeting young black audiences that attained cult status, but they didn’t receive the same adoration. House Party, which was released on March 9, 1990, changed that.

You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times. Smooth Play keeps picking up women right and left, humiliating his “dragon-breathed” wallflower chum Bilal. Kid, grounded by his Pops (Harris), because of a school fight, sneaks out. At the party he is torn between two school sirens, Sharane (A. J. Johnson) and Sidney (Tisha Campbell), who are also being romanced by the insatiable Play. Some scenes were okay (the battle rap scene stood out the most, the only scene I thoroughly enjoyed) but overall nah. I never watched these films (from what I remember at least) in the 90's, I did used to watch CLASS ACT with Kid N Play over and over though so not sure why...

The teen movies of the 1980s, such as those written and directed by John Hughes, left an indelible mark on the decade. In many ways, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Pretty in Pink, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off are as representative of the ’80s as Reaganomics. That is the snapshot of Americana his administration sought to protect. These films depict a distinctly safe, white, suburban teenage existence.

The Rams unveiled the lavish mansion where they will run their draft with features that include a game room, lounge, pool and covered bar. There’s an issue much larger than box-office grosses and net points riding on the shoulders of this small, imperfect teen comedy. The media, Reggie feels, has created an inaccurate stereotype--that all black kids are anti-social dopers. Reggie Hudlin, however, defends his depiction of urban black kids who just say no. Reginald and Warrington Hudlin grew up in the manufacturing city of East St. Louis, Ill., across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Mo.; their mother is a junior high school teacher, their father an insurance broker.

The film taps into the glitz ethos of the age of social-media envy without necessarily scrutinizing what it all means. Kid ‘n Play had put on a party to remember, but the new movie, much like Kevin and Damon themselves, just goes with the flow of the scam. In most teen movies, when white guys get their dates home late, their main concern is angry fathers.

“We all feel that the success of movies like ‘House Party’ create more opportunity for all black film makers,” Warrington says. “There’s a whole non-commercial marketplace now--museums, public forums, public TV--and that’s where the next wave of black film makers will come from. New Line Cinema is about to spend about $4 million on prints and advertising to reach just that target audience as the company releases “House Party” on 500 screens in nearly 100 markets on Friday. Major cities without sizable black populations--Denver, Seattle and Boston among them--are being excluded during the initial break. New Line executives will wait to see if word-of-mouth builds a broader audience before investing in a wider release. Meanwhile, a single from the film, “Fun House,” is out, and a Motown sound-track will be released Monday.

He finally gets to shoot his shot after he invites her to his house party (with a little help from LeBron James’ address book), where she appears, as herself. The golden age is long gone, and now we get either retreads of Broadway shows or rock concert films. Only occasionally, in films like "Saturday Night Fever," "Dirty Dancing" or even "The Little Mermaid," do we get a film where the dramatic developments coexist with original and creative sound track music. In his high-school cafeteria, Peter, also known as "Play," announces that he will be having a party at his house that night, as his parents are on vacation. Their friend Christopher "Kid" Robinson Jr. gets involved in an altercation with school bully Stab and his brothers, Pee-Wee and Zilla. At home, Kid tries to convince his father Christopher "Pop" Robinson Sr. to let him go to the party.

To call it a teenage movie would confuse the characters with the subject. Yes, it's about a crowd of black teenagers who go to the same school and hang out together, and it's about their loves and rivalries and a party that one of the kids is having at his house. But the plot is an excuse to hang a musical on, and the movie is wall-to-wall with exuberant song and dance.

“Let’s get a new crew of young’uns up in there to tell it their way,” says Reid. Comedian and internet personality Drew “Druski” Desbordes makes a small but significant cameo towards the end of the film. After LeBron shows up to his party-wrecked house, Desbordes is one of the revelers who greets him at his front door. Lil Wayne makes the briefest of appearances in the film, playing himself; in the scene, he assesses the severity of a party foul that involves Odell Beckham Jr.

“Even though you had Beat Street and Wild Style, there was nothing like this,” says Christopher “Play” Martin, who portrayed the party’s suave host. Clueless sparked a teen movie revival during the mid-’90s and Cruel Intentions supposedly put the genre 6 feet deep at the decade’s close, but House Party set the standard. "House Party" is first of all a musical, and best approached in that spirit.

“House Party,” made with affectionate brashness by the Hudlin brothers, celebrated the way that a great party could seem like it was everything. One reason the film is so fondly remembered is that its fast-break wit was an expression of pure joy. Like all teenagers, he believes that life literally exists one day at a time, and that an opportunity missed today - especially an opportunity to meet the girlfriend of his dreams - is missed forevermore. He sneaks out of the house, leading to a long night of mild slapstick as he's chased by his father, by the police and by three tough athletes from his school who he has unwisely offended. House Party is a 1990 American comedy film directed by Reginald Hudlin. Harpster, New Line’s marketing co-president, says his research on black viewing habits and the sales patterns of black films tells him that the “core audience” for “House Party,” black teens, is virtually certain to pay back the film’s costs.

In late 1987, they took Reggie’s feature-length script of “House Party,” based on his student film, to executives at the New York headquarters of New Line Cinema (“Nightmare on Elm Street,” “Hairspray,” “Torch Song Trilogy”). But making commercial feature films remained an elusive goal. At Harvard--he graduated in Reggie’s senior thesis was a 20-minute film called “House Party,” which won a New England regional student Academy Award as best film. Partners since 1986, the two brothers have taken turns producing what the other writes and directs, including a number of videos for such hip-hop groups as Heavy D and the Boyz, Guy, and the Uptown Crew.

However the day of the party, he gets in trouble with the local bullies (R&B group Full Force) and causes a fight at his school. His father (comedian Robin Harris) is informed of this and bars Kid from going to the party. Kid manages to sneak out anyway and hilarity ensues both at the party and afterward proving to be a long night for everyone involved. The House Party franchise consists of American comedies, based on a short film written/directed by Reginald Hudlin in 1990. The franchise consists of the original short film, three theatrical releases (the first film and its first two sequels), two straight-to-home video sequels, and one theatrical continuation movie. The plot additionally involves these characters' attempts to fame, in the Hip-hop/Rap music industry.
